Growing up in Buffalo, NY, Deborah Prater always knew she was going to be an artist. Oil abstracts in NYC? Maybe not. Scenic watercolors in Paris? Too far. But graphic design in rural Connecticut turned out to be just the right move.

Studying fashion illustration in Pittsburgh led to illustrating and designing ads in major Buffalo department stores. From there New England beckoned. A move to the family’s summer home and several years as illustrator and designer at a greeting card company fueled her to start her own business.

Working in this field before the advent of computers, learning illustration, creating paste-up mechanicals and studying the basics of good design, have all contributed to using the Mac to perform these functions to the highest standard. Studying Photoshop to enhance an illustrated piece or to create the look of a photographed set-up shot without the use of photography (apologies to all her photographer friends)…working for years in QuarkXPress to create hundreds of pages for catalogs, books and newspapers, not to mention playbills, posters and any other kind of print material imaginable…using Illustrator to create logos, artwork and alter and redesign type faces…all this has led to a most demanding, satisfying and remarkable career.
